Community Caves
Community Caves is popular hiking location just outside of the small town of Spearfish that transforms through the seasons. During the winter months, ice walls build off the overhang from the natural spring above. The hike is quite vertical, but relatively short, and it is a prime spot for stunning canyon wall views.
HWY 34
Highway 34 runs from Sturgis, SD and continues east running into Minnesota. This highway has a variety of scenic opportunities. The particular spot where this image was taken was the very moment when the road looked never ending, creating that surreal vantage point. Also a very perfect depiction of what South Dakota outside of the Black Hills looks like.
Iron Mountain
Iron Mountain Road, also known as the Pigtail Highway, has incredible views of the Southern Black Hills behind every corner. This image was taken at sunrise facing east on top of a large rock that lies off the road about 250 yards as indicated on the map sketch. Some refer to this rock as Baldy Rock, due to its bald characteristics, and its large cranium shape.
Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake might not have Mount Rushmore on the other side of it like depicted in the movie, National Treasure, but it does provide visitors with dozens of beautiful hikes, views, and stunning reflections of the iconic rock structures that boarder the north shore of the lake.
Badlands
Badlands National Park is a location that is out of this world, hypothetically. About 10 miles outside of Wall, SD the land suddenly transforms from grasslands to Mars. It keeps you on your toes with the dramatic views and quickly changing weather patterns that constantly shape this fragile landscape.
Pactola
Pactola Resivoir is much more than just a beautiful place to hike, camp, and swim. Before November of 1952, a small town called this underwater valley home. Once the dam was constructed the few structures that remained were auctioned off, which left only one building, the old Civilian conservation Corp camp dynamite bunker lying deep beneath the surface.
